For the last few months I have been using “Smart Launcher” by developer GinLemon and it has become my firm favourite due to it’s simplicity and overall tidiness.
Using Smart Launcher
The first time you use smart launcher the home screen will contain some default apps in the “flower” that act as the normal app draw normally at the bottom of the screen. You will also notice that there is only one home screen. Your full list of apps can be found by either pressing the 6 dots on the bottom left of the screen or swiping from the left edge of the screen.
Smart Launcher will attempt to sort your applications and games into folders identified by the icons down the left side of the screen. This was about 80% accurate on my phone with my list of applications. But you can move them between groups and I will cover that later.
The Home Screen
You can add new Apps to the home screen by pressing and holding an empty area then clicking the + symbol. Pressing the wallpaper symbol will let you change the wall paper and the lock symbol will stop all further changes.
When you add an icon to the the home screen, the flower will expand as required. Removing one will shrink the flower appropriately.
The Application Folders
When the installed applications have been sorted into groups, you can move them around as required by pressing and holding the applications icon and then when the screen changes, drag the large icon to the group you would like the application to show in.
You can also start an application uninstall from this screen too, just click UNINSTALL and Android will ask for confirmation before removing the application from your device.
Smart Launcher Pro
There is a premium version of Smart Launcher that adds a few extra features like:
- Widget Support
- Extended Drawer transition Effects
- Double Finger Gestures
- Possibly more
I am currently using the free version as I don’t current feel the need for widgets but when my mood changes I will happily upgrade so I can use widgets.
Having used a lot of the Launchers available the feature I like most is the simplicity. I do not need to put all my applications on the home screen as they are correctly sorted and just a press away. I like the layout options for the home screen (flower or grid) and the speed of the launcher is perfect.
